Serge Aimé Coulibaly / Faso Danse Théâtre & Halles de Schaerbeek

Kalakuta Republik

What does it mean to make political art today? Inspired by the Nigerian musician, political activist and inventor of afrobeat Fela Kuti, Serge Aimé Coulibaly and his team explore the connection between art and revolt. What happens when an artist becomes the leader of a movement? How are resistance movements triggered? And what comes after the revolution? The Burkina Faso choreographer’s new piece is a hypnotic, powerful evening, as well as a poetic performance that leads directly from the African revolution into our globalised present.

Serge Aimé Coulibaly is a dancer and choreographer from Burkina Faso. Born in Bobo-Dioulasso, he has been working in Europe and around the globe since 2002, and has collaborated with artists such as Alain Platel and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. His inspiration is rooted in African culture, and his art is committed to a powerful form of contemporary dance. In 2002 Coulibaly established his own dance company, Faso Dance Théâtre, which also fosters the development of other artists from Burkina Faso – as a site of encounter, reflection and artistic research on contemporary dance in an African context.
