Trajal Harrell

Caen Amour

Dancers wearing flowing, colourful, continually changing costumes, are moving against the backdrop of an oversized doll’s house. They strike contrapposto poses. The New York-based choreographer Trajal Harrell is once more diving into the history of dance, this time into the epoch when various influences came together to form modern dance. “Caen Amour” stages a sensual meeting of the hoochie koochie – an ‘orientalist’ belly-dance like imitation from the USA – the Jugendstil icon Loïe Fuller, and Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of butoh. What emerges is a cross between a hoochie koochie show, a runway show, an installation and a dance lab.
