Au-delà de l'humain
Several of the invited choregraphers reflect upon the Japanese butoh dance theatre, from varied perspectives: In About Kazuo Ohno: Reliving the Butoh Diva’s Masterpieces, performance artist Takao Kawaguchi focuses on video recordings of renowned butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno, who helped to revolutionise dance and founded butoh in the wake of the Second World War. In his new work Dança Doente (Sick Dance), Brazilian artist Marcelo Evelin takes up the writings, images, and dance of Japanese dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, who is also known as a founder of butoh. The New York-based choreographer Trajal Harrell dives into the history of dance, into the epoch when various influences came together to form modern dance. Caen Amour stages a sensual meeting of the hoochie koochie – an ‘orientalist’ belly-dance like imitation from the USA – the Jugendstil icon Loïe Fuller, and, once again,Tatsumi Hijikata. In his outdoor performance Au-delà de l'humain the Cameroonian artist Zora Snake seeks out a bodily freedom through a Butoh-inspired dance ritual.
